What a Debate!

Where to start? Where?

First - kudos to Martha Raddatz for showing Jim Lehrer what the word "moderator" means. She was not perfect: her Catholicism question was personal and not governmental, as Lawrence O'Donnell pointed out. Luckily, there was a response pivot to abortion, which is governmental. All in all, though, she was terrific.

And then there was Joe Biden. Clear, smiling (not smirking) full of facts, data and gravitas. Nor was he afraid to call out Ryan and the Romney-Ryan ticket on their lies, falsehoods and bait-and-switch "facts". Ryan seemed ill at east, unable to respond quickly or factually on any foreign policy issue, and mischaracterizing  all of his numbers relative to unemployment, Social Security and Medicare. He did, though, point out that he and Mittens would basically outlaw abortion in most cases. Nice to have that clarified, again.

Who won? There were two big instapolls: CBS had it at 50-31, Biden. CNN had it 48-44 Ryan. CNN's number is relatively untrustworthy. Their sample group for the first presidential debate was all white Southerners over the age of 50, so we'll have to see what they admit to in their sample group for this debate. Basically, since Fox hated the outcome and blasted Raddatz (as did Drudge and the rest of their cabal), and the CNN pundits called it a tie, it looks like Biden was the clear winner.

Face it, Democrats are more realistic and honest: we knew Romney won on style last week. When their guy loses on style, substance and facts, they can't come close to admitting it.

But hey, that's just one girl's opinion. What's yours? Feel free to use the comments to write about your favourite debate moment.

Religion and Politics (0.00 / 0)
As anyone well-versed in U.S. History knows, separation of church and state was considered paramount by the Founding Fathers. Only in the alternate universe of the right wing is the division non-existent. Abraham Lincoln was once widely criticized in numerous newspaper editorials for invoking the word "God" a few times in his second inaugural address. Lincoln, who was actually something of a closet atheist, is currently being characterized as a "Marxist" in some neo-Republican circles. That's politically and chronologically equivalent to calling Marx an "Ike Republican."

Today, the word "God" is invoked by candidates as often as Rudy Giuliani drops "9/11" into his sentences. It seems like every interview, political ad and debate must offer them the opportunity to tell us how important God is in their lives and which of their personal religious doctrines they would impose on the rest of us.

Mr. Ryan appears oblivious to the need for separation between church and state even as he criticizes the theist lunatics who have purged all traces of secularism in Iran. He tells us it's religion-hating to ask Catholic hospitals to offer services that go against the Church's tenets but he would have no problem imposing his church's rules on non-Catholic hospitals and citizens as well. Of course, the "church" he's really protecting is the private insurance industry which wants to avoid paying for as many drugs and medical procedures as possible.  American Catholic bishops have provided Ryan with a handy smoke screen to cover up Ryan's marriage to the insurance cabal. Oh yes, Mr. Ryan wants to please the bishops too, even if it means Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and atheists all have to convert to Catholicism to satisfy his twisted Worldview.

Like Mr. Biden, I too prefer to live in the United States of America and not in Mr. Ryan's Catholic States of America.
